19th-Ranked Women's Swimming & Diving Wins Tiger Invitational With Ease

SAN ANTONIO – Trinity's 19th-ranked women's swimming & diving team secured a victory of more than 400 points as the third and final day of the Tiger Invitational came to a close.

Trinity powered past the competition with 1,182 points over three days of swimming and two days of diving at the Alamo Heights High School Natatorium. University of Texas-Permian Basin and Southwestern University tied for second with 736.5 points. Trinity won all five swimming events on Sunday, while also finishing second on one board and third on the other in the diving competition.

Alexis Radhakrishnan (Lexington, Ky. / Paul Laurence Dunbar) was the runner-up no the low board with 439.00 points, finishing behind a diver from UT-Permian Basin. Alexana Heinrich (Lubbock, Texas / Lubbock) was fourth in the 1-meter competition with a score of 304.15 points, while finishing third in the 3-meter diving event with a score of 150.55.

Emma Hagan (Overland Park, Kan. / Olathe East), Audrey Jacobson (Dallas, Texas / School for the Talent and Gifted), and Caroline Myers (Austin, Texas / Bowie) were all individual winners, while also teaming up with Josie Gillentine (Heath, Texas / Rockwall Heath) to win the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:31.77.

Jacobson posted the top time of 2:05.67 in the 200 backstroke and was one of three Tigers to reach the finals on Sunday. Renee Trombley (Fort Collins, Colo. / Fossil Ridge) was sixth in the finals, while Bethany Mueller (Buda, Texas / Hays) finished eighth with times of 2:13.83 and 2:14.79, respectively.

Neely Burns (Phoenix, Ariz. / Thunderbird) won the 200 back prelims with a time of 2:07.17, which would have been third in the finals. Instead of swimming the finals, though, Burns focused on the 200 breaststroke event, which wound up with Trinity taking three of the top four spots. Burns won in 2:17.52, followed by Sidney McCullough (Centennial, Colo. / Cherry Creek) in second place with a time of 2:28.02, and Lindsay McKinney (Victoria, Texas / Saint Joseph) finishing third in 2:31.41.

Hagan won the 100 freestyle with her time of 51.12 seconds, which was the second-fastest time in school history coming into the 2022-23 season. Gillentine finished fifth with her time of 53.81 seconds, while Kylee Hutchinson (Corpus Christi, Texas / Flour Bluff) was seventh in a time of 54.42 seconds.

Myers and Erica Peterson (Lantana, Texas / Guyer) took the top two spots in the 200 butterfly. Myers won the finals with a time of 2:08.26, while Peterson was second in 2:15.69. Erin Morie (St. Louis, Mo. / Cor Jesu Academy) actually posted the top time of 2:09.83 to win this morning's prelims, but she was disqualified in the finals.

In addition to taking first in the 400 free relay, Trinity had another team of swimmers that were just over three seconds behind their teammates in third place. Burns and Hutchinson raced with Julie Schwam (Portland, Ore. / David Douglas) and Rachel Brown (Flower Mound, Texas / Marcus) in a time of 3:34.80 to take the bronze.

Karin Petersen (Cibolo, Texas / Randolph) was fourth in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 18:40.57 on Sunday.

Coach Speak
"It was great to see what the team could do with a few days of rest," said Head Coach Cathleen Pruden. "The women did a great job making improvements from prelims to finals and really showed up for the relays. This weekend's meet should serve as some great motivation as we head into the second half of our season."

Up Next
The Tigers will not compete again until early January, traveling to the West Coast for two days of action against teams in California. Trinity begins the trip at Occidental College on Friday, January 6, then takes on Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and California Lutheran University on Saturday, January 7. The team returns home for a dual meet with Southwestern on January 14.
