Celts edge Schreiner 77-74 for 12th straight win

KERRVILLE, Texas – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas withstood a close call from Schreiner en route to a 77-74 victory over the host Mountaineers on Saturday.

Freshman guard Austin Arnold (FR/Katy, Texas) knocked down two big free throws with 11 seconds remaining in the game to give the Celts the cushion they needed. Alex Dehoyos' 3-point attempt to tie the game for Schreiner missed the mark with seven seconds left, and UST held on for the victory.

UST remained undefeated in 2019-20 with the win, as the Celts improved to 12-0; the Celts sit atop the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference standings with a 6-0 in league record.

Kennard Robinson (SR/Houston, Texas) led four UST players scoring in double-figures Saturday, as he tallied 13 points and handed out eight assists. Freddie Ricks III (SO/Cypress, Texas) added 12 points for the Celts, while Christian Alaekwe (JR/Fresno, Texas) chipped in 11 points off the UST bench. Nathan Thormaehlen (SR/Katy, Texas) scored 10 points for the Celts.

The Celts trailed at halftime for only the second time this season as the Mountaineers took a 43-42 advantage into the midgame break. UST took control of the game with 13 unanswered points between the 15:49 and 11:30 marks of the second half that gave the Celts a 62-49 lead.

UST led by 75-63 with five minutes to play before Schreiner responded with 11 unanswered points to pull to within one. A dunk by Matthew Rindahl capped the run with 14 seconds left, which set up Arnold for his free throw line heroics.

Arnold scored six points in the game for the Celts, while teammates Cameron Gims (SO/Cypress, Texas) and Joshua Sanchez (FR/McAllen, Texas) scored eight points apiece. Gims also recorded five steals for UST.

The Celts return to action Monday, Dec. 6, when they play Randall (Okla.) in their final non-conference game of the regular season. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at UST's Jerabeck Center.
