Softball Completes Sweep of Trinity

Softball Completes Sweep of Trinity

Day two of the Southwestern/Trinity match-up didn't disappoint as the two teams battled back and forth in game one with the Pirates edging out the Tigers and then pouring on seven runs in the third in game two for the 8-0 run-rule win.

The pitchers were in full command of the game in game one on both sides, scattering base-runners throughout the first three and a half innings. Kaitlyn Pavlicek (pictured) broke the silence in the bottom of the fourth, crushing the second pitch over the left field fence for a solo homerun, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead through four.

Taylor Turpin led off the sixth with a single up the middle and moved to second on the reliable bunting of Jessica Bryant. Pavlicek finished the job with an RBI single to centerfield to bring Turpin home and push Southwestern's lead to two, 2-0 with one inning to go.

Needing to only hold the Tigers at bay to secure the game one win starting pitcher Lauren Zearfoss turned it up on the mound against the heart of Trinity's lineup using just four batters to close the game. Zearfoss was incredibly efficient on the mound, throwing 80 pitches, 59 for strikes, to earn her 12th win of the year. She scattered three hits and allowed no runs while walking one and striking out four on the afternoon.

Pavlicek bore the brunt of the weight at the plate, going 2-3 with two RBI's and one run scored.

Trinity came out on a mission in game two, getting the first two batters on base with singles and moved them to second and third with one out. Starting pitcher Lyndsy Maus showed immense poise under pressure and struck out the next two batters to keep the Tigers from scoring.

Southwestern got their chance in the second inning and capitalized on it. Kayla Irvin started with a leadoff single up the middle and Karen Ramirez followed with a single past TU's diving second baseman. Tessa Galloway brought pinch runner Kimberlyn Lurati home with a chopper up the middle for the first run of the game.

The Pirates added to their lead in the third with a well-executed sacrifice bunt by Carmen Gadt that scored Turpin and Irvin followed with a single to bring home Bryant who reached on an error on her sacrifice. Galloway's single scored two more and Southwestern scored seven after batting around aided by Tiger errors to lead by eight, 8-0, after three.

Maus closed out the game allowing just one baserunner the rest of the way. She earned her 10th win of the year by scattering four hits while walking one and striking out five.
Galloway led the way going 2-2 with three RBI's and one run scored.
The weekend sweep moves Southwestern to 22-10 on the year, a perfect 8-0 in the conference, and hold a two game lead over second place Millsaps with eight games to play. The two teams faceoff in two weeks in Georgetown but the Pirates have to first handle a feisty Austin College squad in Sherman on April 9th and 10th.
