Celts topple Schreiner Mountaineers 77-58

KERRVILLE, Texas – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas earned a split of their weekend road trip Saturday as they defeated Schreiner 77-58.

Bresha Orange (SR/Longview, Texas) scored a game-high 23 points for the Celts while Sheridan Hopkins (SR/Galveston, Texas) chipped in 11 points and five steals as UST (9-4) improved to 4-2 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

The Celts maintained control for the duration of the contest, as they outscored Schreiner in every period. UST led by as many as 22 points in the fourth quarter.

UST players shot only 33 percent from the field (26 of 78) and from 3-point range (8 of 24) but sank 89.5 percent (17 of 19) of their free throws. The Celts also forced 30 turnovers in the game, which yielded a 35-11 advantage in points off turnovers.

Many of UST's points off turnovers came in transition, as the Celts outscored the Mountaineers 19-0 in fast-break points.

Hayden Morin (FR/Humble, Texas) scored nine points off the UST bench, sinking three 3-pointers in the game. Jazz Taylor (SR/Duncanville, Texas) scored seven points and pulled in nine rebounds, while Olivia Anga (SO/Rosharon, Texas) pulled in 13 rebounds in addition to scoring five points.

Schreiner (4-8, 2-2 SCAC) got 12 points apiece from Sydney Williams and Yasmine Arogunjo.

The Celts return to action Friday, Jan. 10, when they host Texas Lutheran. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at UST's Jerabeck Center.
