Box Score Zach Lambert drained a go-ahead three-pointer with a fraction under 10 seconds remaining to lift Trinity University to a 52-48 victory over Colorado College on Saturday afternoon at Sam's Gymnasium.
Â
With his team down 50-48 with less than six seconds to go,
Ryan Milne nearly put CC back in front, but his long-range jumper from the right wing rattled around the inside of the basket before popping out. TU added a pair of free throws with one second left to close out the scoring.
Â
Trinity, which improved to 13-7 overall and 8-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, opened a two-game lead over both Colorado College and Schreiner University.
Â
CC trailed 25-16 when William Young sank a pair of free throws 2:22 into the second half, but battled back to take its first lead at 40-38 when
Chris Lesnansky converted on two charity tosses with 5:54 to play.
Â
Neither team led by more than two points the rest of the way.
Â
Colorado College went up 48-46 after
Russell Clark made a pair of free throws with 1:16 left. After Jonathan Wilt sliced TU's deficit to one, the Tigers ran the shot clock down to the wire before missing a jumper that could have extended the lead to three.
Â
Milne scored all 14 of his points in the second half to fuel the comeback attempt.
Â
Justin Berardino recorded eight of his 10 points during the first half to keep CC in the contest. He also finished with a game-high nine rebounds.
Â
Clark made four of five shots from the floor and tied his career high with 10 points.
Â
Robert Kitzinger led TU with 14 points, while Lambert finished with 13.
Â
Colorado College, which slipped to 13-5 overall and 6-3 in the SCAC, can take sole possession of second place when it plays host to the Mountaineers on Friday, Feb. 7, at Reid Arena.
