Texas Lutheran opens up 2020-21 season with resounding road win over Centenary (La.)

SHREVEPORT, La. -- The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs got their 2020-21 women's basketball season off to a resounding start Friday with an 87-39 conference road victory over the Centenary College (La.) Ladies.
 
TLU moved to 1-0 overall and to 1-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Centenary dropped to 0-1 overall and to 0-1 in the SCAC.
 
The Bulldogs opened up a 41-24 lead at the half and then out-scored the Ladies 46-15 in the second half. TLU led by as many as 50 late in the game.
 
Senior shooting guard Olivia Balderas (San Antonio/Incarnate Word H.S.) paced the Bulldogs with 16 points, a career-high. Balderas hit five of her six total shots and four of her five attempts from the three-point line. Her four made three-pointers in a game was also a career-high.
 
Balderas, who also had three assists, led four Bulldogs into double figures. Senior post Abby Hroch (Port Lavaca/Calhoun) registered a double-double, with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Hroch made six of her 12 shots from the field.

Sophomore guard Kailey Lacy (Pflugerville/Hendrickson) chipped in a career-best 15 points. She made a career-best five three-pointers, going 5-for-6 from the arc.
 
Fellow sophomore Sydney Shaw (Lockhart/Lockhart) also added a career-high in points. Shaw, a guard/forward, scored 10 and added five rebounds.
 
Redshirt sophomore shooting guard Jayla Santa Maria (Edinburg/Edinburg) pulled down nine rebounds and scored seven.
 
TLU made 13 of its 26 three-point attempts and shot 48.3 percent overall (28-for-58).
 
Centenary was held to 26.4 percent shooting overall and to 29.4 percent from the arc.
 
The basketball season starts for the Bulldogs and Ladies, and the entire SCAC, were pushed back to January because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Each SCAC team will play a 12-game conference regular-season schedule.
 
The top eight teams, based on regular-season results, will qualify for the 2021 SCAC Tournaments. The tournaments are scheduled for March 4-6 in Sherman, Texas (women's tournament) and in Georgetown, Texas (men's tournament).
 
TLU and Centenary play a conference contest again Saturday in the Gold Dome. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
