Mallory’s Brace Lifts Tigers Past JWU

Box Score

Will Mallory struck for the first brace of his career, including the game winner with a little more than five minutes to play in regulation time, to lift the Colorado College men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Johnson & Wales University on Tuesday afternoon at Stewart Field.

Mallory scored with a right-footed blast high inside the near post after pouncing on the deflection of a Jackson Silverstein shot in full stride on the left side of the box.

The sophomore midfielder recorded his fourth goal in the last four games less than two minutes after returning the game following Kyler Fowkes penalty kick that leveled the score in the 83rd minute.

Mallory now has factored in five game-winning goals this year, scoring three and setting up two others.

"Will has made significant contributions at the attacking end of the field,' head coach Scott Palguta said. "Most people take notice of goal quantities, but the timing of goals is just as important. Nearly all of Will's goals and assists have been critical to the outcome. He has really stepped up and produced at some important times."

The Tigers broke through in the 60th minute when Mallory headed Keenan Amer's cross from the left sideline into the upper right corner.

With the assist, Amer climbed into a tie with Miles Montgomery for the team lead with four.

Colorado College finished with a 26-7 advantage in total shots and a 10-3 edge in corner kicks.

Despite dominating the game statistically, the Tigers found it difficult to get a shot past JWU goalkeeper Brandon Coder, who finished with eight saves.

A little more than 90 seconds into the contest, the freshman keeper made a diving stop on Isaac Kenner's header at the back post, which was a sign of what was to come.

Early in the eighth minute, CC's Skyler Stark-Ragsdale hit the crossbar with a header off of Mallory's direct kick from outside the box on the left side. Stark-Ragsdale also hit the post 10 minutes into the second half.

The Wildcats nearly leveled the score in the 61st minute when Emad Mohammad collected an errant pass and went in 1v1 with Keller Mochel. Colorado College's junior keeper came off his line to challenge, and Mohammad touched the ball around Mochel only to hit the left post.

Mochel finished the game with three saves, the best of which was on a lofted shot from 25 yards out by Alexis Araiza with a little more than seven minutes remaining in the first half. Mochel, who had come off his line, had to retreat quickly and dive backwards to tip the ball over the crossbar.

"It took a lot of strength and concentration to bounce back after such a disappointing and stressful weekend," Palguta said. I was particularly happy with the response to conceding a late tying goal and am proud of the positive attitude I saw from all who played.

"Henry Schuler has done a commendable job as a senior captain to keep the ship steady during some uncertain times."

The Tigers, who improved to 11-5-0 overall and 9-4-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, play host to Centenary College on Friday, Oct. 19, at 3 p.m.
