Colorado College tuned up for Sunday's showdown with Birmingham-Southern College by defeating Oglethorpe University, 28-0, on Friday afternoon at Washburn Field.
The Tigers improved to 8-0 for the first time in program history with their first official home victory of the 2011 campaign. CC, which also is 5-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, has outscored its conference rivals 111-9. The Stormy Petrels dropped to 2-8 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
Colorado College eclipsed the 20-goal mark for the fourth game in a row while holding its fifth consecutive opponent to five goals or less. The Tigers set a program record for largest margin of victory and tied the school record for goals in a single game.
Zach Steedman and Jeff Moore combined for CC's first shutout since last season's 27-0 victory over Southwestern University. Steedman stopped three shots during 36:42 between the pipes and saw his season goals-against average drop to 3.93. Moore steered aside the only shot he faced.
Carson Christman scored four goals and set personal single-game highs with seven assists and 11 points, all in the first half.
Moses Taylor struck for the first four goals of the game, including the fourth game winner of his career, and finished with five points.
Freshman attacker Jake Smith paced Colorado College with five goals, while classmate Tyler Allen scored four times and added three assists. CC's first-year players accounted for half of the team's goals and six assists.
The Tigers launched 65 shots, including 41 on goal. Cooper O'Brien made 13 saves for Oglethorpe, which finished with eight shots. Garret LeBlanc took a team-high four shots.
Colorado College finished with a 51-18 advantage in ground balls and won 26 of 32 faceoffs. Buck McKenna won 14 of 15 draws and grabbed seven ground balls, while Will Harris was successful in eight of 12 faceoffs and picked up a game-high nine ground balls.
Sunday's contest against BSC will likely determine the top seed for the inaugural Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament which will be played at Washburn Field in April 22 and 24.
