Short-handed Bulldogs secure huge SCAC win over Austin College

SEGUIN, Texas -- Playing without three senior starters, the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs knocked off the defending Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Champions, the Austin College Kangaroos, with a 70-64 home win in overtime.
 
With the victory in TLU's Memorial Gymnasium (Jim Shuler Court), the Bulldogs improved to 4-3 overall and to 4-3 in the SCAC. Austin dropped to 5-3 overall and to 5-3 in the SCAC.
 
Austin College forced overtime with two free throws with five seconds to play in regulation, but TLU out-scored the Kangaroos 14-8 in the overtime period.
 
The Bulldogs had just eight players available for Friday's game, and all five starters ended up playing at least 32 minutes.
 
Forward Ashley Reyes and guards Jayla Santa Maria and Jenesis Navarro logged 38, 37, and 37 minutes, respectively.
 
Reyes, a sophomore from Karnes City (Karnes City), scored a career-high 14 points and pulled down a career-best eight rebounds.

Santa Maria (Edinburg/Edinburg) also scored her career high, 17, and she added six rebounds and four assists.
 
Heaven Dandridge's career-best 14 points came on four three-pointers and a pair of free throws. Dandridge (Bay City/Liberty Hill) hit four of TLU's five three-pointers.
 
Bulldog forward Morgan Rodriguez (New Braunfels/Canyon) grabbed 10 rebounds and scored nine.
 
TLU went to the free throw line 31 times and made 21.
 
The Bulldogs held Austin College to 35.9 percent from the floor and to 24.2 percent (8-for-33) from the three-point line.
