Gents Edge Austin College 2-1 On Friday In SCAC Play

Sherman, Texas - The Centenary men's soccer team held on for a 2-1 victory in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Friday night over the Austin College 'Roos at the Dr. Jack R. Pierce Memorial Soccer Complex.

The Gents (5-11-1, 1-6 SCAC) won their first conference match of the season and won their second-straight match after defeating ETBU on Monday in Marshall, Texas to snap a 10-gane losing streak. Austin College fell to 2-13 overall and 0-7 in SCAC play with Friday's loss.

Centenary, despite the recent losing streak and overall record this season, has played much better than those marks indicate as the Gents have now allowed one goal or less in a match 10 times this season.

The Maroon and White struck first in Friday's match as junior MF Colton Howard (Keller, Texas) scored in the 32nd minute of the first half for a 1-0 lead off the assist from sophomore D/MF Michael Smith (Baton Rouge, La.). Howard, who also scored the Gents' first goal on Monday, is now tied for the team lead in goals and points.

The Gents took their 1-0 lead into halftime and then just minutes into the second half, senior MF Cole Schultz (Denham Springs, La.) found the net for a 2-0 lead on an unassisted goal. The score was Schultz's first of the season. Diego Rodriguez scored the lone goal for the 'Roos in the 53rd minute but Centenary's stout defense held AC at bay for the final 35 minutes to secure the road win.

Senior GK Sami Borchalli (Lafayette, La.) played all 90 minutes and picked up the victory as he recorded five saves. Austin College's Connor Tullis also played the entire match and allowed both goals and made seven saves. The Gents took 19 shots in the match to 12 for the 'Roos and the teams combined for 13 corner kicks, with Centenary taking eight.

The Gents will face Dallas (5-9, 2-5 SCAC) on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in their regular-season finale.
