Pirates Sweep Conference Opener at Hendrix

Pirates Sweep Conference Opener at Hendrix

As the Southwestern softball team hits the midway point of the season they continue to get stronger and took four games at Hendrix College over the weekend to start off SCAC Conference action 4-0. The wins improve the Pirates to 16-10 on the year.

The Pirates saw two close games on day one, narrowly winning 4-2 and 4-3. In game one SU found themselves tied with the Warriors through five innings despite ending with twice as many hits as Hendrix. One run in the sixth and another in the seventh inning gave Southwestern the breathing room they needed to secure the win on defense.

In game two the Pirates needed extra innings to win the ball game. SU had a three run fifth to go up by one run, but the Warriors evened the count in their half of the inning, pushing one across the plate.

Neither team could score in regulation but it was the Pirates that scored the game winner on Kayla Irvin's single in the eighth and played strong defense to pull out the win.

It was a close one once again in game one on day two. Both teams pushed three runs across the plate in the second inning but it was the Pirates who scored one in the sixth. Irvin led off the inning with a single to left and Karen Ramirez followed with a well executed sacrifice bunt to move pinch runner Kaylee Kucharski into scoring position. After a deep fly ball to right field Kucharski advanced to third and was able to score on a Warrior error to put SU up 4-3. It was all Southwestern on the defensive side as they held off Hendrix's attempts to even the count, securing the win.

With new resolve and momentum on their side the Pirates were blazing in game two. A consistent offensive presence put Southwestern on top and kept them there as they won the final game of the series 10-0.

Amanda Ambrose (pictured) led the way at the plate for the Pirates, going 5-11 with two homeruns, one sacrifice, three RBI's and three runs scored. Irvin also had 3 RBI's on the weekend including the game winner on Saturday.

The duo on the mound was as consistent as always. Lyndsy Muas posted a 2.08 era on the weekend, allowing nine hits and three runs while walking none and striking out 16. She posted one shutout in her two complete games. Zearfoss had a 3.21 era with two complete games, allowing seven hits and five runs while walking five and striking out 18.

The Pirates return home to face the University of Dallas on Saturday beginning at 1:00 pm.
