Dallas Volleyball Impresses in Tournament, Wohldmann Named to All-Tournament Team

At the University of Dallas Volleyball Invitational hosted by Austin College in Sherman, TX on September 4 and 5, the Lady Crusaders split their four game series going 2-2, which bumped their overall season record to 2-3. The tournament featured a couple of exciting bouts, the highlight of them being a match with McMurry in which the Crusaders narrowly won against a well matched team in Saturday's opener.

UD opened up the tournament paired against the Hendrix College Warriors. The team walked away with the victory 25-21, 16-25, 25-22, and 25-22. Two freshmen, setter Amanda Kitten (Slaton, TX/Lubbock-Cooper H.S.) and outside hitter Teresa Wohldmann (Florissant, MO/Nerinx Hall H.S.) played an instrumental role in securing the team's first victory. Playing setter, Kitten had a team high 49 assists. Many of her sets went to her outside hitter Wohldmann, who had 17 kills on 32 attempts with only 2 errors for a .469 attack percentage. Defensively, sophomore libero Kelli Fuentes (Garland, TX/Rowlett H.S) recorded 23 digs.

In their final match that night, the Crusaders were not able to build on the momentum they had gained in their first victory, and they fell to Austin College 9-26, 1-25, and 21-25. In the loss, Kitten and Wohldmann again led the team, respectively contributing 14 sets and 11 kills in the loss.

Saturday began on a high note for the Crusaders, as UD earned a hard fought victory over McMurry by defeating them 21-25, 26-24, 28-26, 28-26 in a five game set. The decisive factor in which tipped the match in the UD's favor was that virtually every Crusader chipped in for her team in one way or another. This was especially true in the front lines, where almost every player scored at least one kill during the match. Wohldmann again registered double-digit kills total with 12, while sophomores Liz Baska (Tonganoxie, KS/Tonganoxie H.S.) and Daneille Fuchs (St. Charles, MO/Duchesne H.S.) had 13 and 11 kills each. Baska, an outside hitter, added an ace and 2 block assists, while Fuchs, a rightside, added 3 aces and 2 block assists. Senior outside hitter Cortney Anderson (San Antonio, TX/Antonian H.S.) also had 6 kills. Amanda Kitten continued her setting success with 42 assists in the matchup. On the defensive side, Fuentes recorded 22 digs. UD finished of the tournament in a loss to Hardin-Simmons University, 15-25, 14-25, 17-25. Kitten with 17 sets, 7 digs, and 2 block assists and junior middle blocker Celina Farrell (Corinth, TX/Lake Dallas H.S.) with 3 solo blocks and 2 block assists represented the highlights in the match.

When it was all said and done, Teresa Wolhdmann was named to the All-Tournament team for the high level of her play over the course of the weekend. Over four matches, she played in 14 games and tallied up 47 kills in 98 attempts for a .306 average, as well as recording 40 digs, 2 aces, 1 block solo, and 6 block assists.
