TOUGH SEASON OPENER FOR PIRATES AT TLU

TOUGH SEASON OPENER FOR PIRATES AT TLU

SEGUIN, Texas - TLU threw a no-hitter in game one and piled on the runs in game two as Southwestern lost their season opener series against Texas Lutheran University on Saturday afternoon. The Pirates fell 2-0 in game one and 12-1 in the second game.

Junior Lyndsy Maus performed well on the mound for SU in game one, striking out eight and walking just one while allowing just two runs, unearned, on four hits. The Pirate bats were quiet, however, and provided no support as Southwestern had just two baserunners in the game.

Both baserunners came in the top of the third. Jessica Bryant was hit by a pitch to start off the inning but was thrown out at second on Abby O'Connor's grounder to the short stop. O'Connor moved to second on an error by TLU's catcher and reached third on Amanda Ambrose's grounder. That is as close as the Pirates would get as Carmichael got Taylor Turpin to ground out to short to end the threat.

TLU wasted no time taking control in game two, scoring three runs in the first and third and adding six runs in the second to take a commanding lead.

SU got the bats going in the fourth and pushed one run across, but that was all the offense could muster as the game was cut short.

Kayla Irvin and Carmen Gadt had one hit each with Gadt recording an RBI. Kaitlyn Pavlicek garnered the loss.

Southwestern will regroup and head to Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday, February 18th for a double header beginning at 1:00 pm.
