Pirates Rebound With Big Win Over Majors

Pirates Rebound With Big Win Over Majors

Southwestern lacrosse came back strong and capped off the game with eight goals in the fourth quarter to defeat Millsaps College 16-1 on Sunday afternoon in Jackson, Miss. Sophomore forward Edward Williams scored a Southwestern record five goals in the contest.

Williams started the scoring three and a half minutes into the game, assisted by Cameron Metzker and Jamie Long added one unassisted just before the first quarter came to a close. The second quarter was a quiet one as each team scored one goal in the last 1:26, giving the Pirates a 3-1 lead heading into the break.

It was all Southwestern the rest of the way. Anchored by a strong defensive core the Pirate's offense was allowed to attack at will and did so successfully with five goals in the third and eight in the fourth for the 16-1 win.

Williams led the way with five goals while Gus Brunger (pictured) and Tyler Downing added three each. Chris O'Quain earned the win with six saves and one goal allowed while Donnie Murray held the Majors scoreless in 29 minutes of action.

Southwestern dominated in every offensive category, taking 35 more shots (50-15) and picking up 15 more groundballs (38-23) than Millsaps.

The win improves SU to 5-7 on the year and 2-2 in the SCAC. They are currently a half-game back from Hendrix who currently occupies the fourth and final playoff spot. The two teams meet for the last game of the season but first the Pirates must face second place Birmingham Southern on Friday at 4pm in Georgetown.
