Gertz Nets 23 as Colorado College Runs Past Crusaders

Senior guard McKenzee Gertz poured in a season-high 23 points to lead the Colorado College women's basketball team to a 91-65 victory over the University of Dallas on Saturday night at Reid Arena.

Gertz connected on 10 of 17 shots from the floor, including three from behind the arc. Her 13 points in the first half helped ignite an 18-2 surge that turned a 26-22 deficit into a 40-28 halftime lead.

"McKenzee had a great day," head coach Katherine Menendez said. "Her tempo running the floor and focused approach when hunting shots in the half court really set the tone for us offensively."

Gertz climbed into eighth place on the program's career scoring list, passing Paige Whitney (2004-08) who scored 1,320. Gertz finished the game with 1.328.

Freshman forward Audrey Bayston added 18 points, while sophomore guard Anna Fanelli and sophomore forward Talia Cloud scored 11 apiece. Fanelli also dished out nine assists to climb four spots into 14th place on the CC's all-time assist list.

"Anna played a complete game from the point guard position," Menendez said. "Her impact was felt on the boards, from behind the arc, and certainly in transition as evidenced by the assists she gave her teammates.

"Audrey is a strong offensive presence for our team and it was fun seeing the versatility in her game tonight."

The Tigers also got a big-time defensive effort from senior guard Abby Walz, who finished with four points, four rebounds and seven assists.

"Abby got it done on both ends of the court today" Menendez said. "Her aggressive defense is a constant and it resulted in numerous fast break opportunities for her teammates. It was great seeing her work on the offensive end as well with a career high in assists."

Anika Herron came off the bench to lead UD with 16 points.

The Tigers recorded a 48-32 advantage on the glass.
