Tigers rally to defeat Metro State

Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Schmoker had three of her 11 kills late in the fifth set to help No. 12 Colorado College come from behind to post a 21-25, 25-23, 17-25, 25-22, 15-13 victory over Metropolitan State College, ranked No. 18 in Division II, on Tuesday night at CC's Reid Gymnasium.

The Roadrunners led 13-11 in the fifth set after a kill by Gabrielle Curtis, but Schmoker responded with three consecutive kills to give CC a 14-13 advantage and Emily Perkins closed out the match with her 11th kill of the night.

The 13th-ranked Tigers improved to 18-2 and extended their winning streak to seven matches with the first five-set victory of the season. The 18 victories are the most for the program after 20 matches since the 1985 team was 19-1.

CC also remained perfect at home with a 10-0 record and improved to 2-1 against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponents.

Perkins moved into a tie for fifth place on the Tigers' all-time kill list with Sarah Morrill (2002-03, 2005) with 1,070.

Colorado College had to overcome a pair of one-set deficits to extend the match. Metro State used a 7-2 run midway through the first set to grab the early lead with a 25-21 victory.

The Roadrunners had a 10-6 advantage in the next set which had eight ties, but Perkins warmed up and had five kills to help the Tigers hang on for the 25-23 decision that ended with a pair of kills from freshman outside hitter Laura Goldsmith.

Metro State jumped out to a 12-6 lead in the third set and CC was never able to get closer than two points, but the Tigers forced a fifth set with thanks in part to Meredith Ballard who put down four of her five kills.

Goldsmith led the Tigers with a season-high 14 kills, 14 digs and three service aces.

Emily Greenhalgh had a match-high 16 kills to pace the Roadrunners, who slipped to 12-5 on the season.

Julie Causseaux had a hand in six of Metro State's 12 blocks, while Curtis was in on five. Amy Watanabe had a match-high 20 digs.

Colorado College returns to Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action this weekend with matches against Rhodes College and Birmingham-Southern College on Saturday, and the first encounters of the season with Millsaps College and No. 14 Southwestern University on Sunday.
