Red-hot Pirates torpedo Colorado College

Box Score Southwestern University shot nearly 55-percent from the floor and scored 20 points off Colorado College turnovers as the last-place Pirates shocked the Tigers, 82-68, on Friday night.

The Tigers, who slipped to 10-11 overall and 7-7 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, have gone from battling with Austin College for the West Division lead to trying to hold off Dallas in a race for the third seed in the upcoming conference tournament.

Southwestern won for just the second time this season and avenged a 58-55 loss to Colorado College on Dec. 2. The Pirates are now 2-20 overall and 2-11 in conference play.

CC trailed just 32-30 after junior forward Ian Rewoldt sank a pair of free throws with 4:18 remaining in the first half, but four missed shots and three turnovers allowed SU to run off 10 consecutive points and build a 12-point lead after 20 minutes.

Southwestern made eight of 14 shots from behind the arc during the first half.

The Pirates outscored CC, 14-6, early in the second half and led 56-36 when Kenneth Brooks drained a 3-pointer with 14:37 remaining.

Senior forward Jeremiah Waters knocked down a pair of long-range shots as Colorado College used a 15-2 run to get back in the game. The Tigers pulled to within 58-51 after freshman forward Chris Lesnansky completed a three-point play with 10:24 to go, but

Southwestern countered with four quick points to push its lead back to double digits.

The Pirates extended their lead to 68-54 when Nick Atiee knocked down a 3-pointer with 7:07 remaining, only to have CC make one last run and claw its way to within 70-63 on a Tramutolo trey with 3:22 to play. That, however, was as close as the Tigers would get.

Sophomore guard Ryan Milne paced the Colorado College with 17 points, six assists and five rebounds. Tramutolo connected on five of seven attempts from behind the arc and finished with 15 points.

Lesnansky posted the first double-double of his career with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while Rewoldt added 12 points and six rebounds before fouling out with 6:21 remaining.

Michael Cantu led the Pirates with 21 points, while Logan Hurley added 18.

CC struggled from the free-throw line, missing 15 of 29 attempts. The Tigers finished with a 43-31 edge on the glass, which resulted in a 15-2 advantage in second-chance points.

Colorado College travels to San Antonio on Sunday to face Trinity University.
