MADISON'S HEADER IN FINAL SECONDS BOOSTS PIRATES PAST HENDRIX

In a game that was tense down to the very end, the Southwestern women’s soccer team pulled out a last second defeat of the Hendrix College Warriors thanks to a header by Danielle Madison.

In a windy first half, the Southwestern Pirates played aggressive and kept control of the ball for most of the half without being able to put the ball in the net. The it was a physical game the majority of the way, played in the middle of the field. However, the Pirates managed 7 shots in the half with two of the best chances coming from junior Amy Douglas early. The Hendrix Warriors struggled to get into the game early and managed just two shots late in the first half.

The second period found the Pirates playing with the wind and the momentum.Southwestern continued their aggressive play by firing another 11 shots while only allowing 4.

For most of the game the ball was back and forth between the Southwestern and Hendrix sides of the field. Both defenses played well and turned away several promising shots.

The Pirates gave the Warriors scares with blistering shots from senior AJ Andreola and Madison that were just over the cross bar. With 5 minutes remaining in the game, the Pirate’s dominance finally paid off. In the 87th minute Amy Douglas blistered a ball toward goal that was tipped and misdirected by a Hendrix defender but continued toward the Hendrix goal. Keeper Allison Mosley made a great diving save to, for the time being, save the game with little time left.

In the final minute of the game AJ Andreola sent her second corner kick in the minute into the box where Danielle Madison was waiting near the back post to head the ball back across the goal and into the side net. That put the score 1-0 with 13 seconds left in the game, it was the game winner.

For the Pirates, Amy Douglas took 4 shots, all on goal, senior Laura Kromann took two shots, AJ Andreola took three shots and had 1 assist, her 1st of the year, Danielle Madison took 4 shots and had the only goal, her 3rd of the season. The Pirates had 8 corners to Hendrix’s 1 and had 18 shots to Hendrix’s 4.

The Pirates improve to 9-8-1 and 3-4-1 in conference while the Warriors fall to 10-6 and 4-4 in conference. Southwestern will face Rhodes on Sunday at 1:00 pm for their final game of the season. SU will honor its seniors prior to the match.
