Poets Down Pirates in First Night Game

GEORGETOWN, Texas - In the first night game of the season the Southwestern Pirates fell behind early and couldn't recover as Whittier College defeated SU 14-2 on Friday night.

Whittier posted the first goals of the game and took a 5-0 lead after the first quarter and added the first three goals of the second quarter to mount an 8-0 lead. In their fourth man-up opportunity of the game, Southwestern was able to get on the board when Jamie Long found the back of the net, assisted by Michael Villa

The Pirates' defense picked up after halftime and held the hot Whittier offense to just two goals in the third frame and trailed by nine, 10-1, heading into the fourth.

Nathan Balke kicked off the fourth quarter with a goal, assisted by Elliot Kelly, to move within eight, 10-2, with 12:35 to play. The Poets closed out the game with four goals to seal the 14-2 win.

The teams split faceoffs evenly at ten each, but Whittier dominated the shot count, taking 53 to the Pirates' 9. Southwestern committed 11 more turnovers than the Poets and picked up nine less ground balls.

Whittier's Hunter Hall led all offensive players with four goals and two assists. Chris O'Quain and Donnie Murray split time in goal and O'Quain recorded six saves while Murray posted four.

Southwestern falls to 0-3 on the season with the loss. They remain at home to face the Merchant Marine Academy on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
