Tigers Win Defensive Struggle 1-0 Over Centre

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Defense has been the hallmark of the women's soccer program at Wittenberg in recent history, and Saturday it came to life again as the Tigers took on the Centre Colonels, holding fast for a 1-0 win.

The exceptional backfield allowed a stunning zero shots the entire game. At this pace, senior goalkeeper Meghan O'Rourke (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) is going to have statistics that do not accurately reflect her talent.

The Tiger's lone goal came from freshman Kelly Foley (Dublin, Ohio/Scioto) midway through the second period. While dribbling downfield, she battled her defender for position and took the ball deep to the right corner, angling a great shot across the front of the goal into the far corner of the net. Her goal stood as only one of two shots on goal for Wittenberg, the other coming off the foot of senior Sydney Bates (Loveland, Ohio/Milford).

Not much can describe the matchup other than a defensive stalemate. The Tigers maintained an advantage throughout the game, however, thanks to solid balance and skilled athleticism, such as that displayed in the always impressive footwork of senior defender Lindsey Rusch (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne).

The Tiger will next take on Mount St. Joseph on Tuesday, Sept. 18, on the road in Cincinnati, Ohio.
