Tigers Make Statement Against PLU

The much-anticipated showdown between No. 2 Colorado College and No. 12 Pacific Lutheran University proved to be no match at all.

CC fired on all cylinders on Saturday afternoon and cruised to a 25-13, 25-12, 25-10 victory over the Lutes that could have a lasting effect on the national and West Region rankings.

Junior outside hitter Haley Harris smacked down 10 kills and junior middle hitter Marguerite Spaethling hit .467 with eight kills on 15 attacks with just one error.

Both teams entered the match with 7-0 records after defeating the University of Minnesota Morris earlier in the day.

The Tigers posted a 25-18, 25-16, 25-15 win over the Cougars in the first match of the day, while PLU found itself in an all-out battle with Minnesota Morris and had to come from behind for a 25-23, 25-27, 24-26, 25-8, 15-13 victory.

A kill from Mackenzie Harris gave the Lutes an 11-10 lead early in the first set, but from that point on, Colorado College put on a volleyball clinic.

Spaethling recorded three kills and a pair of blocked shots as CC closed out the first set on a 15-2 run.

The Tigers carried the momentum into the second set and raced to a 10-3 lead. Harris produced kills on eight of her 10 swings and Pacific Lutheran never got closer than five points.

Colorado College did not let up in the third, scoring six of the first seven points to open an early five-point lead. Freshman outside hitter Isabella Vasquez put down four kills and had a pair of blocks to help CC close out the match.

Spaethling led the defensive effort with six blocked shots, while junior libero Anna Gurolnick posted a match-high 15 digs.

The Tigers held the Lutes to a -.031 hitting percentage, marking the second time this season an opponent hit under .000.

Danielle Skibiel led PLU with six kills and Eva Nelson had a team-high 10 digs.

In the win over Minnesota Morris freshman opposite hitter Laney Swan hit .636 with eight kills on 11 swings with only one error.

Spaethling hit .529 with 10 kills on 17 attacks with just one error.

Junior setter Lizzy Counts produced 31 assists, six digs, four kills and had a hand in a pair of blocked shots

The Tiger defense held its opponent to under a .100 team hitting percentage for the sixth time in seven matches.

Tori Everson led the Cougars with six kills, while Alyssa Ukestad had a team-high nine digs.

Colorado College will be at home again next weekend when it welcomes Christopher Newport University, Covenant College and Johnson & Wales University to Reid Arena for the 2018 Pikes Peak Challenge.
