In front of a spirited crowd Rhodes played the first regular season NCAA lacrosse game in the history of the program.  Though the Piedmont Lions prevailed 19-10, head coach Dave Zazzaro was very pleased with the game.  “The team battled the entire day.  I was proud of how we played for four quarters,” said Coach Zazzaro.  “Our team is getting better every day.”

Piedmont quickly gained the lead with seven goals in the first period with scores from Spencer Ortis, Nicholas Green, Max Rowse, John Gantz, and Patrick Ammons. Hugh Madison scored the lone goal for the Lynx in the first period.

The Lynx held the Lions to only three goals in the second period, however. Two goals by Hugh Madison and Peter Hall kept Rhodes in the game. William Hornaday came through in a big way for the Lynx with two goals in the third period, with another score coming from Van Roerty. The Lynx defense, however, could not stifle the Piedmont offense, allowing six goals in the third period. Rhodes managed to cut the lead to nine scores with four goals in the final period, while holding the Lions to just three scores.

Peter Hall had a breakout game with one goal and four assists. Will Posey led the Lynx offense with three goals. Hugh Madison and William Hornaday helped penetrate the Lion's defense with two scores apiece. Rounding off the Rhodes offensive play were goals by Van Roerty and John Stanford.

Mike Clary, Rhodes Director of Athletics, would like to give special thanks to seniors Peter Hall, Van Roerty, William Hornaday, Austin Pyhrr and Tommy Lockwood for their commitment to the club program for three years.  “We could have waited a year to start playing at the NCAA varsity level, but Peter and his fellow seniors deserved this opportunity.  We know the 2012 season will be a growing year, but after seeing Coach Zazzaro and his team perform today, I'm very excited about the future of the Rhodes Men's Lacrosse program.”

Rhodes will return to action this Wednesday with a home game against Augustana College (IL).  Game time is 2:00 pm.
