Texas Lutheran closes out 2021 season with loss in SCAC semifinal

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Texas Lutheran saw its 2021 season come to a close Saturday afternoon at Colorado College with a 70-56 loss to the Tigers in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament semifinal.
 
Colorado College, the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament, advances to the conference championship game to play either top seed Trinity or defending SCAC champion Austin College. Trinity and Austin play in San Antonio at 4 p.m. Sunday.
 
For the No. 3 seed Bulldogs, the season is over. The Bulldogs end the year with a record of 5-4.
 
Colorado College opened the game on a 24-5 run and led by 23 at the half, 39-16.
 
TLU made it a 10-point game in the third quarter and again in the fourth quarter. But the Bulldogs could get no closer than 10 each time.
 
SCAC Player of the Year McKenzee Gertz paced the Tigers with 16 points and six rebounds. Abby Walz added 13 points and three assists.
 
TLU sophomore guard Jayla Santa Maria (Edinburg/Edinburg) led all scorers with 20 points. She hit eight of her 14 shots and all three of her free throws.
 
Junior post Morgan Rodriguez (New Braunfels/Canyon) added 17 points, three rebounds, and two steals.
 
TLU was 2-for-17 from the three-point line. CC hit eight of its 17 three-point attempts.
