Reserves Fuel 4-0 Victory Over Southwestern

Box Score Thanks in part to a massive performance from its reserves, Colorado College struck for a season-high four goals and sailed to a 4-0 victory over Southwestern University on Sunday afternoon at Stewart Field.

In just his fourth appearance of the season, sophomore midfielder Cam Stopforth came off the bench to record the first brace of his career. Freshman midfielder Hayden Gogswell notched his first collegiate goal as the Tigers improved to 6-1-1 overall and 4-1-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

"Our bench was outstanding," head coach Scott Palguta said. "Everyone who came on made a difference in the game, but the standout performances belonged to Cam Stopforth and Hayden Cogswell. They really gave the group a spark out wide in the second half."

Senior forward Caden MacKenzie ignited a three-goal explosion in the 50th minute when he took a pass from junior midfielder Joel Frykholm and scored from a sharp angle on the left touch-line with a shot to the far post.

MacKenzie leads the team with four goals, three of which were game winners.

A little more than four minutes later, Stopforth doubled CC's lead when he won a tackle in the middle third, dribbled into the left side of the box and rifled a shot past Pirate goalkeeper Ryan Benner high inside the near post.

"I saw the space, dribbled into it and decided to shoot," Stopforth said. "I knew as soon as I hit it that it was a good one."

Cogswell got on the board with a brilliant 1v1 move in the 57th minute. He took the ball from a Southwestern defender near midfield, avoided a tackle near the top of the box and deftly slipped the ball around Benner as the keeper came off his line to make a challenge.

After taking a commanding lead with three goals in a span of 7:21, Stopforth closed out the scoring with 9:19 to play when he collected a feed from MacKenzie at the top left corner and sent a shot into the right side of the net.

"It was huge performance from the substitutes," Stopforth said. "That's what we need if we're going to be a deep team. We need that kind of commitment from (player) one to 30. It sends a message to everyone in the SCAC that we're hitting our stride."

At the other end of the pitch, the Colorado College defense allowed a season-low one shot on goal while recording its third consecutive clean sheet and sixth of the season.

Theo Hooker was forced to make only one save while posting the 22nd shutout of his career. The junior goalkeeper tied David Kheun's program record of 22 since goalkeeper stats were first recorded beginning in 1992.

The Tigers finished with a 21-5 advantage in total shots and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

Benner recorded six saves for Southwestern, which slipped to 5-4-0 overall and 4-1-0 in the conference.

CC continues its seven-game home stand next week when Centenary College and Austin College visit Colorado Springs for SCAC matches on Friday night and Sunday afternoon, respectively.
