Walk-Off Homer Gives Softball Split with Hendrix

Walk-Off Homer Gives Softball Split with Hendrix

Sophia Hernandez delivered a three run walk-off homer to give the Austin College softball team an 8-6 win in game two of their doubleheader with Hendrix College on Sunday, following a 5-3 loss in game one. The 'Roos are now 3-15 overall this season.

In game one the 'Roos jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on a pair of RBI singles by Chelsea Delaney and Charlotte Trudell, and another run came home in the second when Jessica Baker doubled and then scored on a single by Briana Hernandez to make it 3-0.

Hendrix would get one run on the board in the fourth, and in the sixth a pair of Austin College errors opened the door for three runs to make it 4-3 in favor of the Warriors. Hendrix would tack on one more run in the seventh to make it a 5-3 final.

Delaney finished 2-for-3 and Baker and Hernandez each went 2-for-4 to lead the 'Roos offensively, while Sophia Hernandez took the loss after giving up four runs, two earned, in 6.0 innings of work.

In game two the 'Roos once again jumped out to and early lead, plating two runs in the top of the first when Heather Farquhar and Mallory Rossmann each doubled home a run. Two more runs crossed in the second to make it 4-0 after a two run double by Baker. After Hendrix got on the board with a run in the fourth, Farquhar got the run back with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning to push it to a 5-1 game.

That remained the score until the top of the seventh, when Hendrix came all the way back and took a 6-5 lead by plating five runs, including scoring the tying and go-ahead runs with two outs. In the bottom of the seventh the first two Austin College batters went down in order before Rachel Ramos singled to keep the inning alive, and Baker's double put two on for Hernandez, who blasted a pitch over the fence in center to give the 'Roos the win.

Baker went 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI and Farquhar finished 3-for-4 with two RBI. Sophia Hernandez went 2-for-5 with three RBI, while Briana Hernandez went 2-for-4. Amber Pemberton went the distance to earn the victory for the 'Roos, striking out six.
