Box Score It was a day of firsts for the Colorado College men's soccer team.
Freshman goalkeeper
Theo Hooker recorded his first shutout and victory and junior midfielder
Max Grossenbacher struck for his first game winner. The end result was a 2-0 triumph over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor for CC's first win of the season.
"It was a rewarding victory," head coach
Horst Richardson said. "I was glad to see we were able to shake off Friday's disappointing result. We played very well and we finished well."
Grossenbacher scored the only goal the Tigers needed in the fifth minute, weaving his way through the Crusader defense to go in alone on UMHB freshman goalkeeper Javier Zaragoza.
"
Tim Huettel played a nice ball to me," Grossenbacher said. "I took a touch to get around the defender and slotted the shot into the bottom right corner."
Senior defender
Andrew Worthington doubled Colorado College's advantage when he buried a header from in front of the near post off of a corner kick by Huettel.
"The defense left that spot open and it was a perfect ball," Worthington said.
A two-goal advantage was more than enough for the Tiger defense, which allowed just five shots on the day.
Hooker stopped the only two shots that were on target and now has played 103:37 without allowing a goal. He was untested until he had to stop Caleb Latson's header with 10:30 remaining in the game.
In addition to his goal, Worthington made a pair of stellar defensive plays to preserve the shutout. A little more than five minutes after scoring, he deflected a pass from Oliver Ortiz to Case Carnes who was waiting unmarked just inside the top of the box.
Then with 3:33 to play in the contest, he blocked a shot by Jordan Freeman from 21 yards out after Hooker had come off his line to play the ball.
"I saw what they wanted to do and put myself in position to play both," Worthington said. "It was a lucky bounce on the second play."
The Mary Hardin-Baylor keepers made three outstanding saves to keep their team within striking distance. Zaragoza made a diving save on freshman forward
Sam Markin's crossing shot from 12 yards out on the right side in the 40th minute.
Senior Blake Lander came up with a pair of stops on CC senior forward
Brandon Ogilvie, the first on a redirect from 10 yards in the center of the box with 15:18 remaining and the second on a blast from 15 yards out on the left with 12:09 to go.
"Ogilvie is on the cusp," Richardson said. "He should have had at least two goals. However, our two captains scored, which was huge.
The Tigers finished with a 20-5 advantage in total shots and a 5-1 difference in corner kicks.
Colorado College continues its six-game home stand next Friday when the Tigers play host to George Fox University at 2 p.m. on Washburn Field.
