SAN ANTONIO, Texas – A pair of Olympico-style goals in the second half off the boot of Laren Gradt proved to not be enough as the Southwestern University women's soccer team was knocked out of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament 2-2 (3-2 PKs) by Texas Lutheran.

The disappointing tie ends the season for the Pirates (9-5-6) after having earned the three seed in the SCAC postseason tournament.

Texas Lutheran (11-7-2) advances on to take on the host Trinity University in Sunday's finals.

TLU's Alyssa Simien tallied her 16th goal of the season to put her team up 1-0 in the 41st minute despite the Bulldogs being outshot 6-3 in the first half and the Pirates collecting a 3-1 corner kick advantage.

The Bulldogs would then go up 2-0 in the 58th minute when Gabriela Varela converted on a penalty kick goal past Southwestern's Johnna Campbell.

Gradt would then get the Pirates on the board with an Olympico-style goal in the 64th minute when she scored directly off a corner kick. It was her second such goal of the season and first since a 4-1 victory over Centenary on Oct. 16.

TLU's Kelly Wolfe missed on what would have been the nail-in-the-coffin goal when she took the Bulldogs' second penalty kick of regulation in the 85th minute.

Feeling desperate to get the game-tying goal, Southwestern forced the pace of play throughout the final moments of regulation and earned another corner kick, which Gradt would also convert into another Olympico goal to tie the match at the 88:23 mark of regulation.

TLU managed two shots on goal that Campbell saved in the first overtime period while Southwestern recorded just one shot on goal in the first overtime as neither team got off a shot attempt of any kind in the second overtime period forcing a penalty kick shootout to see who advanced to the SCAC title match.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-2 lead after the first three rounds of PKs forcing all kinds of pressure on the shoulders of the final two shot takers for the Pirates.

The Southwestern faithful in attendance would see the season come to an end when the next two Pirates failed to convert.

Southwestern recorded an 18-10 shots and a 10-5 shots on goal advantage but could not convert when they needed to the most.
