Birmingham-Southern used a big second half run to down LaGrange College 78-54 on Tuesday at Mariotti Gym. The loss kept the Panthers winless at 0-4, while Birmingham improves to 3-0.
Brandon Maddox had 12 points for the Panthers. Marcus Vaughn added 10 points. Birmingham's Jasen Jonus led all scorers with 17 points.
Birmingham never trailed in the game. The visiting Panthers scored the game' first 13 points.
Blake Craft's 3-pointer broke the scoring drought for the host Panthers. Vaughn's jumper cut Birmingham's lead to 13-9.
The Panthers fell behind by 10, 24-14 with 3:58 left in the half. Maddox's 3-pointer cut Birmingham's lead in half, 24-19. The visiting Panthers opened up a 32-21 halftime lead as Brandon Blaise hit a jumper at the buzzer.
The Panthers stayed close in the first six minutes of the second half. Stephen Tuck scored off a pass from Vaughn to make it 40-35. It was as close as the Panthers got the rest of the way.
Jonus started 22-3 run for Birmingham with a jumper. He added a 3-pointer during the seven-minute stretch as the visiting Panthers put the game out of reach.
The Panthers shot 35.1 percent in the game, including 6-for-22 from 3-point range. Birmingham had a 46-30 rebounding edge in the game. The visiting Panthers shot 50.8 percent in the game.
The Panthers play Oglethorpe at Emory University on Saturday and Emory on Sunday.
