Celts conclude fall season at ITA Regional

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas enjoyed a successful weekend at the ITA Men's Regional Tennis Tournament, hosted by Southwestern University.

UST's doubles combination of Peter Ellwanger (SR/Magnolia, Texas) and Quashi "Ayo" Philips experienced nothing but victory this weekend, as the pair won the Flight "C" doubles tournament. Day one of the event saw Ellwanger and Philips claim back-to-back 8-3 victories to advance to the semifinal round of the tournament.

In the semifinal round, UST's dynamic duo faced Brian Martin and Cody Aaron of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. In what proved to be their toughest match of the weekend, Ellwanger and Philips prevailed by a score of 8-4.

The tournament final pitted the UST pairing against Southwestern's Kyle Brown and Tyler Norman. Though SU's pair had the home-court advantage, it was Ellwanger and Philips who prevailed, again by a score of 8-3.

Ellwanger saw plenty of court time over the weekend, as he won his first two matches in singles play. In the "C" flight, he opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 win over John Swords of UMHB. Ellwanger then defeated McMurry's Brynson Harmon by scores of 6-2, 6-3, before bowing out to Texas Lutheran's Josh Bowman by scores of 6-4, 6-1.

In Flight "A" singles play, Race Haas (FR/Friendswood, Texas) also gave the Celts a representative in the third round of the tournament. After a default win in the opening round, Haas claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win over Dia Ndumbe of Hardin-Simmons. In the third round, Haas was eliminated by Southwestern's Hunter Bajoit by a score of 6-4, 6-3.

The men's ITA event concluded the fall season for the Celts. UST will begin playing its first traditional season in Spring, 2020.
