Milne leads Tigers into SCAC title game

Box Score Junior guard Ryan Milne scored 18 points and dished out seven assists as Colorado College cruised to an 81-68 victory over Austin College in a semifinal game of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday night.

The Tigers advance to Sunday's championship tilt where they will play Trinity University for an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

CC's balanced offense had six players finish with double-figure points.

Sophomore forward Chris Lesnansky and freshman guard Justin Berardino each scored 12 points. Senior forward Ian Rewoldt recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while senior guard Jake Tramutolo and freshman forward Tyler Jonas added 10 points apiece.

The Tigers also dominated on the glass, posting a 45-27 advantage. Milne grabbed seven rebounds, while Berardino and Lesnansky each had six.

Colorado College outscored the Kangaroos 21-7 during the first 10:49 of the second half to open a 26-point lead. AC scored 10 consecutive points to pull to within 58-42 with 7:43 to play, but the Tigers pushed their advantage back to 20 with 3:19 remaining.

Three turnovers and a missed free throw helped Austin get to within 10 points on a layup by Walter Phillips with 1:10 to go, but that was as close as the hosts would get.

The Tigers sank 10 of 12 free throws during the final 68 seconds to close out the victory.

Colorado College shot a fraction under 58 percent from the floor during the first half and built a 37-25 lead after 20 minutes.

After the Roos tied the game at 17-17 on a basket by Alen Michael, the Tigers answered with a 13-2 run to take a double-digit lead for the first time on a pair of free throws by Berardino.

Austin cut its deficit to 30-23 when Ransom Okpala scored two of his game-high 22 points with 2:33 to play in the first half, but the Tigers responded with the next seven points.

CC led by 14 points after junior forward Daniel Webb knocked down a jumper with 1:02 remaining in the first half, but Okpala scored as time expired to trim the advantage to 37-25 at the break.

Phillips made seven of nine shots from the field and finished with 19 points.

Colorado College improved to 16-10, its most victories in a single season since the 1992-93 squad finished with a 17-8 record.

In the first semifinal, Robert Kitzinger and Heath Hopson combined for 43 points to lead top-seeded Trinity to a 69-61 triumph over Southwestern University.
