Murphy’s 15 saves not enough vs. Roanoke

Box Score Sophomore goaltender Chase Murphy stopped 15 shots, but Colorado College was unable to penetrate the Roanoke College defense and dropped an 11-3 decision to the 13th-ranked Maroons on Sunday afternoon in a game played at Dallas Jesuit High School.

Junior midfielder Henri Halle gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead when he scored 1:02 into the contest. Roanoke tied the score a little more than two minutes later on a goal by Tyler McWilliams and took the lead when Will Pilat struck six seconds after that.

CC trailed just 5-2 when Halle notched his second marker with 5:23 remaining before halftime, and nearly cut its deficit to two during the opening seconds of the third quarter.

Junior midfielder Sayre Thomas won the faceoff, scooped up the ground ball and put a shot past Roanoke goaltender Charles Pease. The ball appeared to go in and hit the bottom frame, but was ruled to have hit the post. "It probably would not have changed the outcome of the game," said head coach Sean Woods, "but it would have given us some momentum."

Instead, RC added three goals before junior midfielder Taylor Paul struck for Colorado College's final goal with 2:40 remaining in the third quarter.

The Maroons finished with a 36-30 edge in total shots, which included a 26-11 margin in those on target.

Murphy posted double-digit saves for the eighth time in his career.

Sophomore defender Tim Jenkins paced the CC defense with five ground balls and caused three turnovers. Thomas won seven of 17 draws and added five ground balls.

Pease made eight saves for Roanoke, which improved to 1-2.

Colorado College (2-2) plays at home for the first time this season when Wentworth Institute of Technology visits Washburn Field on Sunday, March 9, at 1 p.m.
