No. 19 Men's Swimming & Diving Retains the Lead at Tiger Invite

SAN ANTONIO – The 19th-ranked Trinity University men's swimming & diving team finished the second day of action at the Tiger Invitational with a 22-point lead over NCAA II University of Texas-Permian Basin.

The Tigers won all six swimming events on Saturday, setting new school records in the 400 individual medley and the 100 butterfly. Trinity has scored 711 points in the first two days of action, while UT-Permian Basin is close behind with 689 points. 

Michael Kohl (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) broke the Trinity record with his time of 47.56 seconds in the 100 fly in Saturday's prelims, then skipped the evening finals to prepare for the 200 freestyle finals. He finished second in the 200 free with a time of 1:40.37. Kohl was also the anchor of the winning 200 medley relay team that finished in 1:29.63.

John Key (El Paso, Texas / Franklin) also broke the Trinity record with his time of 4:00.12 in the 400 IM and was a part of the 200 medley relay team that finished third with a time of 1:34.16. He was also second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.83 seconds.

Kendal Southwell (Rio Rancho, N.M. / Calvert Online Academy) won the 100 breast in 56.02, then joined Kohl on the winning 200 medley relay team. Trinity had four swimmers in the finals of the 100 breast, including Brennan Jimenez (Fair Oaks, Calif. / Bella Vista) and Wesley Wasserburger (Austin, Texas / Bowie), who finished fourth and eighth, respectively.

Matteo Lanzara (Moraga, Calif. / Campolindo) took the gold medal in the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.00 seconds, while also swimming the opening leg of the 200 medley relay.

Caleb Manifold (Helotes, Texas / Homechool) was the fourth member of the top 200 medley relay team while also winning the finals of the 100 fly in a time of 49.28 seconds. Wasserburger was third in the 100 fly with a time of 50.80 seconds that was just over a second off of the winner.

John Fontenot (Austin, Texas / St. Andrew's) teamed up with Key, Nathaniel Early (Austin, Texas / Westwood), and Wasserburger for a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:34.16). Early won the 200 free in a time of 1:39.16 to edge out Kohl by just over a second.

Trinity will close out the Tiger Invitational – and the fall semester schedule – tomorrow at the Alamo Heights High School Natatorium. The swimming prelims begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by diving at 1:30 p.m., and the swim finals at 5:00 p.m.
