CCU comes from behind to edge Tigers

Box Score Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Hahn tied her career high with 16 kills, but it wasn't enough to get Colorado College a victory in its annual Dink Pink match against Colorado Christian University on Wednesday night.

After dropping the first set, the Division II Cougars stormed back to record a 24-26, 25-17, 25-20, 25-23 triumph and hand the Tigers their first home loss of the 2013 season.

"We battled, but we made too many mistakes and gave them too many easy points," head coach Rick Swan said. "It was a good match against great competition. I wish we could play them every day."

The Tigers finished with 18 unforced errors and hit just .163 as a team. CCU also scored eight points on service aces.

CC nearly sent the match to a fifth set, scoring three consecutive points to pull to within 24-23 on a blocked shot by Hahn and freshman middle hitter Keli Sherwood.

Instead of taking a full swing on match point, Ali Weber tipped to an open spot along the sideline to earn the final point of the night for Colorado Christian.

Sophomore outside hitter Emily Phillips recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 13 kills and 11 digs, while sophomore opposite hitter Courtney Birkett added 10 kills and had a hand in three blocked shots.

Sophomore libero Sophie Merrifield recorded 29 digs, the 10th time this season she had more than 20 digs in a match. Merrifield also eclipsed the 500-dig mark to become just the seventh Tiger to accomplished that feat in a single-season. She currently has 872 digs, which ranks 16th on CC's all-time list.

The Cougars got a monster performance from sophomore outside hitter Taylor Sturms, who finished with a match-high 21 kills.

Sophomore outside hitter Summer Greager, a Colorado Springs native, added 14 kills and 16 digs for Colorado Christian.

CCU improved to 11-8 overall.

Colorado College, 25-2 overall, returns to action on Friday night with a non-conference match at Johnson & Wales University in Denver.
