Audrey Bayston came off the bench to score a game-high 21 points and ignite a second-half offensive explosion that resulted in a dominant 83-58 victory for the Colorado College women's basketball team at Centenary College on Friday afternoon.
Bayston connected on nine of 14 shots from the floor, including a 6-for-9 effort in the second half, when her 15 points helped CC break open a tight game by outscoring the Ladies 52-28 during the final 20 minutes. The first-year forward also grabbed eight rebounds.
"Audrey had a breakout night and her presence was felt all over the court," head coach
Katherine Menendez said. "Her willingness to hunt down rebounds as well as scores was a tremendous boost to our team's offense."
Anna Fanelli posted her second consecutive double-double, only this time the sophomore point guard did it with 15 points and 10 rebounds, which matched her career high. It was Fanelli's third double-double of the season. She also sank nine of 10 free-throw attempts.
"Anna had a huge showing from the line and her defensive rebounding translated nicely for our team's offense," Menendez said.
McKenzee Gertz also finished with 15 points and added six rebounds. With her first rebound late in the first quarter, the senior guard became the eighth player in program history to record 700 or more in her career. She finished the game with 705 to climb past Kris Lund's (1979-80, 81-84) total of 704 and into seventh place on Colorado College's career list.
Sophomores
Rosie Braley and
Tedy Reed added 14 and 11 points, respectively, giving the Tigers five players in double figures.
CC turned in a commanding effort on the glass, finishing the game with a 53-34 advantage in total rebounds.
Centenary stayed close during the first half by scoring 21 of their 30 points from behind the arc, including a buzzer beater by Blair Abshire to pull to within 31-30 after 20 minutes.
The Ladies cooled off considerable during the second half when they made only three of 15 long-range shots to finish the game a fraction better than 30 percent from three-point range.
"Our team bounced back from a slow start and showed solid flashes in the second half," Menendez said. "It was a group effort and every single player brought something positive to the court down the stretch."
