Seniors Celebrate as CC Blanks Schreiner

The six seniors on the Colorado College men's soccer team made the most of their final appearance at Stewart on Sunday afternoon.

They factored in all four goals and anchored the defense that recorded its 11th clean sheet of the season as the Tigers cruised to a 4-0 victory over Schreiner University.

CC improved to 13-5-1 overall and 11-4-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, and clinched outright possession of second place in the league's table and first-round bye for the SCAC Championship which starts on Friday with a pair of quarterfinal games in Georgetown, Texas.

The Tigers broke through in the 12th minute when Jackson Silverstein scored with a first-touch shot from the middle of the box into the lower left corner.

Silverstein notched his third goal of the season off senior midfielder Keenan Amer's cross from the left sideline. It was Amer's team-leading fifth assist of the season.

Colorado College added an insurance goal late in the 38th minute when senior midfielder Robert Malone converted from the penalty spot with a shot to the upper right 90. The penalty was given after junior midfielder Hayden Cogswell was taken down in the box while pursuing a through ball from Silverstein.

Malone now is tied for 25th in program history with 19 career goals and tied for 28th with 52 points.

Senior forward Daniel Krueger capped the day by scoring twice in a little more than five minutes to record his second multiple-goal game of the season.

Krueger knocked in the rebound of sophomore midfielder John Schuler's shot in the 78th minute, and put a shot in the lower left corner from the top of the box after taking a pass from freshman midfielder Connor Copus with a little more than eight minutes to play. It was the first career point for Copus.

In the defensive third, senior captains Henry Schuler and Griffin Wesley anchored a suffocating effort that held the Mountaineers to just four total shots, only two of which were on target.

Schreiner's first scoring opportunity did not occur until nearly 15 minutes had expired in the second half. That's when Jacob Williams received a cross from Daniel Banda in the middle of the box, but the senior forward pushed his shot wide of the left post.

Junior goalkeeper Keller Mochel made his first save in the 60th minute on a sharp-angle shot by Banda, and secured the shutout a little more than a minute later with a two-handed grab on a Jose Penagos header from the edge of the six-yard box.

With his 11th shutout of the season, Mochel tied the single-season record set by Ezra Bayles in 1992.

Mochel lowered his season goals-against average to 0.74 and improved his saves percentage to .788.

The Mountaineers finished the season with a 3-13-2 overall record and a 2-11-2 mark in the SCAC.
