Rose leads Tigers past Millsaps in SCAC opener

Nick Rose scored a game-high 26 points to lead Colorado College to a 68-61 victory over Millsaps College in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Friday night at CC's Reid Gymnasium.

Rose made 10 of 17 shots from the floor and all four of his free throws as he eclipsed the 20-point mark for the fourth time in five games.

After the Majors jumped out to a 9-0 lead, Rose scored 11 in a row to put the Tigers ahead. The only thing that slowed him down was foul trouble. He picked up three fouls in less than a minute midway through the second half and scored just two points the rest of the game.

Colorado College used a 14-7 run late in the first half to build a 34-27 lead after 20 minutes. The Tigers appeared to be complete control after Jarrell Sweet's three pointer gave CC a 53-37 lead with 13:17 remaining in the game.

But Millsaps answered with a 13-2 run and cut its deficit to 55-50 with 6:16 remaining in the game.

Brady Ohlsen scored twice in the paint to help the Tigers build their lead back to 62-54, only to see the Majors answer with four points to pull to within 62-58 with 1:35 to go. But that was as close as Millsaps would get.

Ohlsen, Harty and Rose each made a pair of free throws during the final 1:09 and the Majors missed five consecutive shots before Blake Martinez knocked down the last of his seven three-pointers with eight seconds to play.

Sweet had 14 points and seven assists, while Ohlsen had 10 points and nine rebounds.

Martinez finished with a game-high 27 points to lead Millsaps. Quinn Lemieux had 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The Tigers improved to 4-1 overall, while the Majors slipped to 1-4.

Colorado College plays host to Hendrix College on Sunday afternoon.
