Women's Tennis Goes 1-3 on Weekend Road Trip

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southwestern women's tennis team had a strong outing over the weekend in Birmingham, defeating SCAC schools Millsaps and Birmingham Southern 5-4, but falling to NAIA Huntingdon 8-1.

On Friday night SU was slow to start as they dropped all three doubles matches against Huntingdon College. Victoria DeLeon and Elyse Bigler were just narrowly bested in #1 doubles, falling 9-8 while Aimee Blake and Kindall Hogenson put up a good fight as well, falling 8-6.

Singles action was much of the same as Southwestern was just narrowly defeated in some matches. DeLeon once again fell in a tie-breaker to lose 7-6, 7-6. Bigler (#2) forced a third set after dropping the first 1-6, winning set two 6-3, but was eventually bested in the tie-breaker 10-5.

First-year Virginia Stofer recorded the only win of the evening, outlasting Vick and coming back from 1-0 to win 1-6, 6-4, 10-7.

Saturday Southwestern returned to their winning ways with a pair of 5-4 wins. Birmingham Southern started out strong in the first game, winning two of the three doubles matches. Blake/ Kindall Hogenson posted the only victory with a 9-7 win over Lamere/Punturo.

After dropping the #1 and #2 singles, BSC took a 4-1 lead and seemed poised to take the match, but the Pirates had other thoughts as they dominated the final four singles matches to pull out the win. Blake easily handled Holst 6-2, 6-2 in #3 singles, Hogenson (#4) fought hard to defeat Panuro 6-3, 5-7, 10-6, Stofer (#5) took down Brooks 6-2, 6-1 and Kristina Krampitz (#6) secured the victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Gartman.

Riding high, SU took on Millsaps College in the afternoon and wasted no time making their presence known, going 2-1 in doubles action. Blake/Hogenson were just narrowly beat in #2 doubles, 9-7, to keep Southwestern from the sweep.

Bigler (#2), Stofer (#5) and Krampitz (#6) made the 5-4 win a reality by easily winning their singles matches, not allowing more than three games in any single set.

The Pirates return to the court after spring break to face St. Catherine's on March 21 at home.
