Box Score Two days after surviving a snow and ice storm, Birmingham-Southern College was not nearly as prepared for a red-hot Colorado College men's lacrosse team.
 
The Tigers stormed back from an early 2-0 deficit and cruised to a 16-4 victory over their one-time rivals in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in the 2014 season opener for both teams on Friday afternoon.
 
"We came out a little tight and a little too aggressive, but that's better than playing passive," head coach Sean Woods said. "Once we settled down, we regained our composure and played very well."
 
The Panthers looked good early, scoring a pair of man-up goals just 1:27 apart after CC was given a three-minute non-releasable penalty for illegal equipment. To make matters worse, Jack Kreitler had what could have been the game's first goal waved off on the play.
 
Despite playing a man down for seven of the game's first 15 minutes, Colorado College began its comeback when Sayre Thomas struck for a shorthanded tally with 6:08 to play in the opening period. A little less than three minutes later, he knotted the score with his second unassisted goal.
 
The Tigers took the lead on a marker by Stephen Petersilge 40 seconds into the second quarter. They added goals by Kreitler, Petersilge and Michael Idell during a span of four minutes to take a 6-2 lead by halftime.
 
CC broke the game open with seven unanswered goals in the third quarter, the first two coming just five seconds apart by Henri Halle and Chris Lee during the first three minutes.
 
Tallies by Sam Winton and Austin Davie extended Colorado College's lead to 15-2 before Birmingham-Southern found the net twice during the final 3:06.
 
The Tigers' Jack McCormick tacked on a final goal with 1:17 to play to close out the scoring.
 
Petersilge paced the CC offense with four goals and an assist, while Austin Davie struck for a pair of tallies.
 
Freshman goalie Ryan Goodall stopped five of seven shots to earn the victory in his collegiate debut.
 
Thomas won 16 of 19 faceoffs and scooped up a game-high 12 ground balls.
 
The Tigers finished with a 45-28 advantage in total shots, which included a 25-10 margin on target.
 
Conor Perine made seven saves during the first three periods for BSC.
 
"We stayed injury free in what became a physical game," Woods said. "Our young guys got the jitters out and I think we'll be ready to play on Sunday."
 
Colorado College travels to Memphis, Tenn., on Sunday to take on Sewanee.
