Crusaders can’t escape CC’s Webb

Box Score Daniel Webb went 4-for-4 from behind the arc and finished with a season-high 16 points to help Colorado College overcome a 15-point first-half deficit and record a 71-66 victory over the University of Dallas on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers improved to 12-9 overall and 8-3 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, one half game behind first-place Trinity University. The Crusaders slipped to 11-9 overall and 6-5 in league play, and trail CC by two full games in the battle for second place.

On a day when several of his teammates weren't at 100-percent, Webb came off the bench to give his team a much-needed lift. The junior forward made six of seven shots from the floor and grabbed five rebounds in just 14 minutes.

“I got in a groove and stayed hot,” Webb said. “Several guys weren't feeling well, so we were keeping our minutes short with high intensity. Guys came off the bench to provide a spark.”

Junior forward Chris Lesnansky scored 15 points, while senior forward Ian Rewoldt added 10 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

Colorado College led 11-9 after freshman guard Justin Berardino buried the first of his three long-range baskets 4:52 into the contest, but junior guard Nate Wilson scored all 10 of his points during a 26-9 run that saw UD take a 35-20 lead with 4:24 remaining in the half.

That proved to be the wake-up call the Tigers needed.

Webb struck for the first five points as CC outscored Dallas 15-2 during the final 4:01 of the first half to close to within 37-35 after 20 minutes.

“Even with the big run, we weren't satisfied with the way we played in the first half,” Webb added. “We weren't worried because we've been there before against these guys.”

The Crusaders made their first five shots of the second half and took a 49-42 lead after junior forward Ross Davidson scored in the paint. The Tigers answered with a 10-0 run and took the lead for the first time since early in the first half when Webb dialed long distance on back-to-back possessions.

After a layup by sophomore forward Mark Pomberger gave UD its final lead at 58-56, Webb drained his final 3-pointer 61 seconds later to put Colorado College ahead to stay.

Three pointers by junior guard Jake Tramutolo and Berardino gave the Tigers a 65-58 lead with 7:20 to play, but Dallas battle back to within two points when Davidson connected from the top of the arc with 1:40 remaining.

Lesnansky hit a clutch jumper with 1:11 to go, and after a missed 3-pointer, the Crusaders lost track of Juwan Rohan on an inbound play and the freshman guard scored on a layup to put CC up 69-63 with 32 seconds to play.

Junior guard Ryan Milne dished out eight assists, scored seven points and had five rebounds.

Davidson and sophomore forward Aaron Wyatt had 11 points apiece to pace the Crusaders. Davidson also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

Colorado College plays its final home games of the 2012-13 campaign next Friday and Saturday when Centenary College makes its first visit to Reid Arena.
