Ladies Basketball Drops Hard-Fought Game to TLU, 70-61

Shreveport – The Centenary women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought game to the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs, 70-61, on Saturday afternoon in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest at the Gold Dome.

Saturday's result, despite the loss, was a stark contrast to Friday's 48-point season-opening loss to the Bulldogs. The Ladies led 33-28 at halftime after shooting 44% (11-25) from the floor, making 6 of 14 in the first quarter and 5 of 11 in the second quarter and shot 44 % overall for the game. Centenary made 12 of 17 free throws and grabbed 35 total rebounds, 31 on the defensive end.

Texas Lutheran took control of the game after halftime, though, as the Bulldogs' Olivia Balderas knocked down a pair of three-point baskets in the first 25 seconds of the third quarter to give her team a 34-33 lead. The Bulldogs outscored the Ladies, 23-9, in the third quarter to take a 51-42 lead headed into the final period. The game featured seven ties and seven lead changes. Each team scored 19 points in the fourth quarter. Centenary scored 30 points in the paint to the Bulldogs' 22.

Centenary was led in scoring by freshman guard Addy Tremie (Sulphur, La.) who posted 18 points in her Ladies debut. She shot 7-16 from the floor in 38 minutes and made four of her 10 three-point attempts and grabbed seven rebounds. Junior guard Kristen Stuart (Kilgore, Texas) scored in double figures for the second day in a row with 12 points on 4 of 10 shooting in 32 minutes. She had 15 points in her debut with the Ladies on Friday.

Senior guard Jennae Mayberry (Clovis, Calif.) also scored 12 points in 37 minutes of action as she made 5 of her 8 field goal attempts and grabbed nine rebounds and had an assist and a steal. Sophomore forward Jazzmyn Jones (Normangee, Texas) scored 10 points off the bench in 21 minutes of action, making 3 of 5 shots and 4 of 5 free throws. Junior guard Alex Williams (Shreveport) scored four points, had five rebounds, and two assists.

Balderas led three Bulldogs in double figures with 18 points. Abby Hroch added 12 and Jayla Santa Maria scored 10. TLU shot 35.3 % overall from the floor for the game. The Bulldogs received 18 points from their bench, led by six from guard Ashley Reyes.

Centenary will hit the road to face Schreiner next weekend in Kerrville, Texas. The Ladies and Mountaineers will face of on Friday, Jan. 22 at 5 p.m. and again on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 1 p.m.
