Celts drop pair of SCAC matches

SEGUIN, Texas – Five days after Tropical Storm Imelda hindered their travel plans, the Celts of the University of St. Thomas made up two missed Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference matches Wednesday, both played at Texas Lutheran.

The Celts dropped matches to Trinity (Texas) – the No. 10-ranked team in American Volleyball Coaches Association's Division III poll – and host TLU.

After playing their first 11 matches of the season away from home, the Celts will make their 2019 home debut Saturday. The Celts host Centenary College (La.) in a battle of SCAC teams, with first serve scheduled for 3 p.m.

No. 10 Trinity (Texas) 3, St. Thomas 1

The Celts took a set from a ranked opponent and narrowly missed taking the opening set in a hard-fought, four-set loss to Trinity.

Scores of the match were 26-24, 15-25, 25-18, and 25-9.

Alaina Lanik (FR/Richmond, Texas) knocked down 14 kills against only two errors and hit .286 for the match. She also handed out 14 assists and tallied seven digs. Kaje Massenburg (SO/Arlington, Texas) put away nine kills for the Celts, while Alyssa Ajlouny (SO/Cypress, Texas) chipped in seven kills and 10 digs.

Kelsie Walker (JR/Baytown, Texas) handed out 22 assists to her UST teammates, while Kaylyn Latin (JR/Houston, Texas) recorded a team-high 24 digs. Alysse Villadiego (SR/Richmond, Texas) tallied eight digs for the Celts.

Texas Lutheran 3, St. Thomas 0

Following the match against Trinity, the Celts faced host TLU. The Bulldogs swept the match from St. Thomas by scores of 25-18, 25-15, and 25-14.

Ajlouny and Emily Jaroszewski (JR/Sugar Land, Texas) led the Celts with four kills apiece, while Walker handed out 12 assists and recorded 11 digs. Latin led the defensive effort with 14 digs, followed by 10 digs from Villadiego.
