GEORGETOWN, Texas - With a 3-0 weekend sweep of three American Southwest Conference schools the Pirate men's tennis team improves to 3-4 in the spring. SU defeated Schreiner 8-1, Texas Lutheran 5-2, and LeTourneau 7-2.
Alex Lam and D'Art Bebel started the weekend off with a bang, winning 8-0 over Cuevas/Wells in #1 doubles on Friday afternoon against Schreiner. The Pirates made it a clean sweep of doubles matches with Alexander Reinsch and Andy Clarage winning 8-3 in number #2 doubles and Alec Bergerson and Andrew Olsson pulling out the win in the #3 slot, 9-7.
The domination continued into the beginning of the singles matches with the top four Pirates winning in straight sets. Bergerson was upset in #5 singles by Hammond, falling in a third set tie breaker 10-5 after winning the opening set 6-1.
Andrew Olsson brought the winning ways back to Southwestern with a third set tie breaker win, 10-7, over Walker in #6 singles.
In a drizzly haze the Pirates set out to take on Texas Lutheran and came to a slow start falling 2-1 in doubles matches. SU regrouped well and took control of the singles matches, winning four to seal the win before the rain came. Lam started off with a commanding 6-2, 6-1 win over Connin #2 singles and Bebel kept it going in the #3 slot with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Schneider. Bergerson and Olsson won in straight sets (6-4, 6-3; 6-4, 6-0) in the #5 and #6 matches to seal the come from behind victory.
With things rolling the Pirates started out strong in doubles matches against LeTourneau, winning #1 and #3 doubles, 9-7, 8-6, respectively. LeTourneau snuck a win in #1 singles before Southwestern cruised the rest of the way, winning the final five matches in straight sets for the 7-2 win.
The Pirates host Lake Forest College at home on March 11th for their next match.
