Houska Leads Tigers Past Centenary

Box Score For the third straight game the Colorado College men's basketball team has been tied with at least six seconds remaining in regulation and for the third straight time the Tigers have come away victorious.
 
Junior guard Eric Houska hit the game winner with one second remaining on a jump shot to hand CC a 71-69 victory over Centenary College in Shreveport, La., on Friday evening.
 
With either team holding no more than a four-point lead during the final 11:33 of the second half, sophomore forward Chris Martin drained a jumper with 37 seconds left in the game to give the Tigers a 69-66 edge.
 
Centenary's Treylan Matthews made 1-of-2 from the free-throw line six seconds later and then hit a layup after he stole the ball to tie the game at 69-69 with 18 ticks left on the clock.
 
Colorado College then called a timeout with 13 seconds remaining and Houska drained the game winner to give the Tigers their third-consecutive win and continue their unbeaten streak in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
 
Houska led all players with 22 points, while junior forward John Hatch added 20 points. This was the fifth time this season that both players have scored at least 20 points in a game.
 
Martin earned his fifth double-double of the season on 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. He also added four assists for a career high as he helped the Tigers improve to 5-9 and 4-0 in the SCAC.
 
Houska made a pair of free throws to give CC a 39-34 lead with 17:25 left in the second half, but Dyllon Weaver made a free throw five seconds later to spark a 13-0 run, which gave the Gents their largest lead of the game at 47-39 with 12:37 remaining.
 
Hatch answered back scoring seven points during a 10-0 run to help the Tigers regain their lead at 49-47 with 9:57 left on the clock.
 
The final nine minutes saw six lead changes and five ties as the teams battled to take control of the game.
 
Cedric Harris gave the Gents a 25-22 lead on a jumper late in the first half before Hatch hit a three-pointer to close out the half on a 10-2 run. Junior guard Ryan Young scored the final basket of the half with four seconds left to send the Tigers to intermission with a 32-27 advantage.
 
Centenary, which dropped to 7-8, 1-3 in the SCAC, was led by Matthews with 18 points, while James Sapp earned a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. KJ Boyd also contributed with 11 points.
 
Colorado College travels to Sherman, Texas to take on Austin College on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT.
