Tigers prevail in War of the Roses

Junior guard Nick Rose tied his career high with 30 points as the Colorado College men's basketball team remained perfect in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a 71-60 victory over Hendrix College on Sunday afternoon at CC's Reid Gymnasium.

Rose has scored 23 or more points in five of six games and leads the conference averaging 22.83 points per game. He scored 30 points last season against Division II Western State College.

Brady Ohlsen scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half to help the Tigers improve to 5-1 overall and match last season's total number of victories. Colorado College is tied with Austin College atop the SCAC's West Division standings with a 2-0 record and will play face the Kangaroos in its next conference game on Jan. 9.

Rose and his Warrior counterpart, senior guard Cal Rose, were locked in a personal duel in the first half when Nick Rose scored the final five points to give CC a 34-31 lead at the break. Cal Rose had 12 points to help Hendrix take a 31-29 lead into the final minute, but that was the last time the Warriors would hold a lead.

CC tied the game when Rose converted on a pair of free throws with 38 seconds to play in the half, and then took the lead for good when he buried a three pointer from the right corner with seconds to go.

The Tigers took command midway through the second half. After Nick Heathscott pulled the Warriors to within 50-45 with 11:07 remaining in the game, the Tigers went on a 17-9 run to build a 13-point lead with 4:09 to go and Hendrix never was able to get closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

Heathscott, who missed the final 8:31 of the first half after picking up his second foul, scored 11 of his team-high 13 points to keep the Warriors within striking distance, but Rose was held scoreless in the final 20 minutes.

Ohlsen had a game-high eight rebounds. Jeremiah Waters added eight points, six rebounds and four assists.

Janson Hightower had seven points and a game-high six assists for Hendrix.

Colorado College is idle until Dec. 15 when the Tigers play at Division II Regis University in Denver.
