Oglethorpe upsets CC in SCAC tournament

Colorado College erased a nine-point deficit in the second half, but could not get the go-ahead basket and dropped a 61-58 decision to Oglethorpe University in the quarterfinals of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday night at Millsaps College.

The Tigers tied the game at 52-52 when Ben Foley sank the first of two free throws, but Joe Kennedy put OU ahead for good 27 seconds later. While CC made just two of six shots from the floor during the final three minutes, the Stormy Petrels converted on seven of 10 free throws to secure the victory.

Nick Rose finished with 18 points and a game-high 10 rebounds to record his fifth double-double in the final game of his career. Ryan Milne made four of six shots from behind the arc en route to a 16-point performance.

Colorado College led 15-9 after Rose drained a three-pointer with 11:43 to play in the first half, but the Tigers went cold and scored just four points the rest of the way. Meanwhile, Oglethorpe went on an 18-4 run to build a 27-19 lead after 20 minutes.

CC made only eight of 27 shots from the floor during the first half and went 3-for-12 from three-point range.

Kennedy led OU with 18 points, while Todd Ward added 14.

Colorado College finished the season with a 14-12 record, its most victories since the 2003-04 campaign when the Tigers posted a 15-10 mark.

Oglethorpe avenged a 64-59 loss at Reid Gymnasium on Jan. 21 to improve to 15-11. The Stormy Petrels play Centre College in a semifinal matchup on Saturday.
