Rijo's goal lifts Tigers past Swarthmore

Sophomore attackman Steve Rijo scored 45 seconds into overtime to give Colorado College a 9-8 victory at Swarthmore College on Sunday afternoon.

The Garnet had the momentum heading into the extra period after scoring the final three goals in regulation to wipe out CC's 8-5 lead, but they never had a chance at a game-winning shot.

Buck McKenna won the draw and, after setting up in the Swarthmore zone, Rijo beat Michael Brockway on the first shot of the extra period.

Brockway kept the Garnet in the contest by stopping 18 of the 27 shots he faced. The Tigers finished with a 42-30 edge in total shots, including a 26-10 advantage in the first half.

Colorado College led 8-5 after James Mauk struck for his second goal with 6:12 remaining in the game, but Jonathan Molloy, Daniel Kowalyshyn and Brendan Conway tallied in a span of 1:26 to knot the score with 3:10 to go.

The Tigers led 7-4 when Carson Christman scored his only goal 13 seconds into the fourth period, only to see Kowalyshyn trim CC's lead back to two with 10:07 remaining.

Colorado College took a 6-2 lead with 7:40 to play in the third period when Jack Kreitler and Moses Taylor scored 11 seconds apart, but the Garnet got those goals back when Wes Marcik and Max Hubbard found the net.

Taylor and Kreitler each scored a pair of goals for the Tigers. Christman had a goal and two assists in the offensive zone, and also picked up seven ground balls and caused four turnovers.

Zach Steedman made eight saves, while McKenna had five ground balls and five caused turnovers for CC.

Marcik scored twice and added and assist for Swarthmore, which also got a pair of goals from Hubbard and Kowalyshyn.

The Tigers improved to 2-0, while the Garnet slipped to 0-4.

Colorado College begins Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play next Saturday at Sewanee.
