Tigers Grab Seconds at CC Classic

The Colorado College swimming and diving teams wrapped up the 22nd annual CC Classic on Sunday with each team finishing second in their respective standings.

CSU-Pueblo won the women's meet, while Barton Community College took home top honors for the men.

The three-day meet began on Friday, when senior Riley Wadehra led a 1-2-3 finish in the 3-meter diving event. Wadehra won with 415.58 points, followed by freshman Peyton Classon with 400.80 and junior Jennifer Middleton with 390.00.

Freshman Mac O'Brien was the only male diver and posted a score of 375.15 in the 3-meter.

On Saturday, freshman Kate Brush continued her outstanding inaugural season with a pair of victories. She captured the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:15.87 and the 100 backstroke in 1:02.57.

Sophomore Cade Thumann also produced a pair of wins for the men on Saturday. He won the 100 backstroke (54.76 seconds) and the 200 freestyle in 1:46.98.

Other female winners on Saturday included sophomore Kerren Matthews in the 200 freestyle (2:05.11) and senior Jio Chang, who tied for first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.24 seconds. On the men's side, junior Walker Martin tied for first in the 100 freestyle in 48.37 seconds.

To close the day, both teams captured the 800 freestyle relay. Brush and Chang were joined by senior Selma Jukic and freshman Millie Benkert, while the foursome of freshman Topher Shepherd, Martin and Cade and Cole Thumann won it for the men.

Classon took the 1–meter diving event with a score of 458.85, and joined Wadehra (2nd with 433.90) and Middleton (3rd with 399.70) in posting a regional qualifying score. O'Brien was once again the lone male diver and notched 376.30 points.

Chang and Brush led a Sunday charge that fell just short in the team standings for the women's team. Chang, swimming in her final meet at Schlessman Natatorium, won the 100 butterfly and the 200 IM. Brush, meanwhile, captured the 500 freestyle and placed second to Chang in the 100 fly.

"I am really pleased with our performances all weekend," Colorado College head coach Anne Goodman-James said. "These last two sessions are especially tough, yet we managed to come back tonight with great energy and intensity and go faster in the finals.  Kate Brush and Jio Chang were big winners for us again today."

Freshman Millie Benkert also posted a win on Sunday, edging teammate Selma Jukic in the 200 backstroke.

The men's team posted a pair of wins on Sunday, with senior Eric Dallesasse winning the 100 butterfly in his final home meet. Meanwhile, sophomore Julian Frerichs led a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 backstroke, with freshman Ben Laidlaw and junior Ethan Hanson finishing second and third, respectively.

"The 1-2-3 finish in the 200 back, with big time drops from this morning, was a phenomenal performance," Goodman-James said. "Now we get focused on the conference championships, which is just 23 days away."

The Tigers are idle until competing at the SCAC Championships, held Feb. 12-15 in San Antonio, Texas.
