Ice-cold Tigers fall to Southwestern

Box Score Colorado College cut a 16-point deficit to three with 18.8 seconds remaining, but Southwestern made just enough of its free throws during the closing seconds to escape Reid Gymnasium with a 64-58 victory on Friday night.

The Tigers slipped to 9-9 overall and 6-3 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and are now tied with the University of Dallas a game and a half behind first-place Trinity.

Southwestern improved to 7-11 overall and 3-5 in league play.

Sophomore forward Chris Lesnansky scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds to pace the Tigers. Freshman guard Luke Winfield had a season-high 12 points, while senior forward Ian Rewoldt added 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Tigers went ice-cold during the first half, scoring just two points in a little more than nine minutes. That allowed the Pirates to open a 16-point lead on a layup by junior forward Sean Myers with 3:33 remaining and CC was never able to fully recover.

After shooting just under 22 percent in the first half and scoring a season-low 16 points, Colorado College appeared to get its game in gear and pulled to within 41-35 when Lesnansky completed a three-point play with 9:39 to play.

SU answered with seven consecutive points, including five from freshman guard Chris Lee, to build a 48-35 lead with 7:29 remaining.

The Tigers pulled to within three points twice during the final minute, but the Pirates made five of six free throws to end any thoughts of another last-second comeback.

With the second of his six assists, junior point guard Ryan Milne climbed past Montell Taylor (1990-94) into sixth place on CC's all-time list and finished the contest with a total of 294.

Junior forward Sean Myers led Southwestern with 11 points. Sophomore guard Adrian Johnson and freshman guard Chris Lee added 10 points apiece.

Colorado College finished the game with a 29.8 shooting percentage from the floor, its lowest of the season, and committed 15 turnovers.

The Tiger face a must-win situation when they play host to Trinity on Saturday night.
