Gents Fall 1-0 To Rhodes College On Sunday

Conway, Ark. - The Centenary men's soccer team fell 1-0 to the Rhodes College Lynx on Sunday in its final match of the 2021 Hendrix Invitational at Warrior Soccer Field.

The Gents (0-0-1) finished the weekend tournament, hosted by Hendrix College, with a tie and a loss after earning a hard-fought double-overtime draw versus the Warriors in their season opener on Friday night. Rhodes (2-0) defeated UT Dallas 3-1 on Friday.

Rhodes finished with a slight edge, 10-9, in overall in shots and each took three shots on goal. Rhodes' Jeffrey Mason found the net midway through the first half with the assist credited to Aidan Sullivan for a 1-0 lead and the lone goal of the match. 

Centenary senior GK Sami Borchalli (Lafayette, La.) played all 90 minutes and made two saves. Rhodes GK Mitchell Fenton made three saves and recorded his first shutout of the young season. Borchalli was named to the All-Tournament team as he played 200 total minutes during the weekend and allowed just one goal and made five saves. He played all 110 minutes of the Gents' double-overtime soreless tie on Friday versus Hendrix and made three saves as he recorded his 10th-career shutout. Senior MF Cole Schultz (Denham Springs, La.) joined Borchalli on the all-tournament squad. He played a combined 101 minutes in the two matches. 

Sophomore D/MF Michael Smith (Baton Rouge, La.) led the Gents with three shots and junior MF Jaron Petreas (Denton, Texas) took a pair of shots, with one on goal.

Centenary opens its home schedule next weekend as the Maroon and White face University of the Ozarks on Friday, Sept. 10 at 6:30 p.m. and then meets the Huntingdon College Hawks on Sunday, Sept. 12 at Noon. The Gents finished 4-1-3 at home last season and are 11-4-3 in their last 18 home matches at Mayo Field.
