Celts stun Johnson & Wales 2-1 in overtime

HOUSTON – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas prevailed in overtime for the second time this season Sunday as they stunned Johnson & Wales (Colo.) by a score of 2-1.

Maxwell Lockhart (JR/Toronto, Canada)'s 20-yard strike from just outside the penalty area in the 92nd minute lifted the Celts (5-5, 1-1 SCAC) to their first victory in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play. Fabrizio Policastro (FR/Houston, Texas) provided the assist on Lockhart's first goal of the season.

The visiting Wildcats (1-9-1) fell to 0-2 in conference play with the loss.

Sunday's match remained scoreless for well over an hour. It was not until the 77th minute when the Celts opened the scoring as Luis Garza (SO/Houston, Texas) took a pass from Joseph Duarte and fired home a shot from less than eight yards out. It was Garza's first goal of the season.

JWU's Zidani Batiste erased the UST less than four minutes later when he redirected a deflected pass into the penalty area for the Wildcats' tying goal.

Pedro Medrano (SO/San Salvador, El Salvador) made four saves for the Celts in goal. UST outshot Johnson & Wales 20-12 and held an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal.

The Celts return to action Friday when they visit Trinity to kick off a stretch of five consecutive road matches. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. in San Antonio.
